The quintet, composed in 1996, begins with a canonically led festive opening, a fanfare of brief proportions that could also be used as the introduction to an event. A dialog develops between a “talkative” trumpet and the horn that is somewhat reminiscent of a marital discussion. A rapturous secondary idea is followed by a calmer part that brings new arguments in the low instruments, which the trumpets oppose. You return to the main idea, become more animated and end the discussion undecided. The slow movement begins pensively and strongly chromatic, expressing grief for a dear friend, but finally comes to a conciliatory, peaceful end. This demands perfect intonation and a lyrical, expressive tone. Comfortable 7/8 time accompanies the melody in its simple logic, which, performed alternately by all instruments, is expanded and ends in a solid coda.
