Church Music

Leopold Mozart’s “church pieces” were considered by one of his contemporaries, Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart (1739-1791), to be his most valuable compositions. In the Documenta Augustana Musica, a series of Latin compositions with clearly identifiable liturgical functions has been published. Among the editions of German-language compositions, originally intended more for devotions and adorations, there are an oratorio for Lent, one for Good Friday, an aria from a lost sacred Passion play, and several strophic arias (for Advent, Good Friday, and Marian veneration).
