Rolf Wilhelm (*1927)

Bavarian-Prussian Friendship Overture

4 Tp, Hn, 4 Pos, Tb, percussion ad lib

A strange title, given that we know about the constant, never quite serious little frictions between North and South. Is it simply a cherished tradition to tease the other person, or is it even a kind of love-hate relationship? But probably, as we Bavarians say “for the fun of it”, you defend the customary customs of the country against the opinion of the “newcomer” in order to spice up the conversation. And – just for the fun of it – I confronted the Bavarian Defilier March, our unofficial national anthem, with some Prussian marches (Prussian Gloria by Gottfried Piefke, Petersburger, Hohenfriedberger, even Beethoven’s York March), gave the Bavarian party Schubert’s support and left it up to the well-inclined listener to decide who might be the winner in this ironic contest. (Rolf A. Wilhelm)
