Description
Johannes Brahms
Duo for clarinet and piano
arranged from the quintet op. 115 by Paul Klengel (1854-1935)
edited by Nicolai Pfeffer
Shortly after its first publication in 1891, Johannes Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet was recognized by critics and contemporaries as a remarkable contribution to the genre, and over a century later it continues to fascinate performers and audiences alike. The Clarinet Quintet, dedicated to the exceptional Meiningen clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld, is presented here in an arrangement by Paul Klengel, authorized by Brahms himself, who was a master at transferring the complex structure of the string quartet to the piano and, moreover, creating a balanced, homogeneous interplay between clarinet and piano. Thus the “Duo” deserves its name and allows this gem of Brahms’ chamber music to be performed with piano as well.
