Arr.: Erich Sepp
“Zapfenstreich” (“Zapfenschlag”, French “retraite”) was the military term for the blow on the spigot with which the beer barrel was closed. The end of the serving of drinks was ordered by a signal. For the foot troops this was initially a drum signal, for the cavalry a bugle call. In the 17th century, it became customary to play a special march, the Retraite or Zapfenstreich, for this purpose, with the minstrels marching through the camp.
The model for this new arrangement was the piano version from “Die Churpfalz-Bayerischen und Königlich Bayerischen Ordonanz-Märsche und Signale nach den Allerhöchsten Vorschriften von 1782, 1791, 1822 und 1823 für das Pianoforte bearbeitet von Carl Hünn, königl. bayer. Music director.”
