Dotzauer, who is known and famous above all for his extensive production of technical study material for cellists, created with this sonata one of the few successful works for violoncello that can only be played in the first position. As with earlier publications (Breval, Reinagle, Lee), Emmerich Bünemann attached particular importance to the translation of the second cello part into an adequate piano part.
