Orazio Vecchi wrote this lively madrigal comedy in 1597, still very much in the vocal tradition of the Renaissance. In this early form of music theater, figures and plot patterns from the commedia dell’arte are brought into a narrative context, creating an appealing mixture of concert madrigal and opera, which was still in its infancy at the time. The two choral movements arranged here for brass quintet also showcase the music of the Renaissance to great instrumental effect.
