Sarabande and Fugue (composed in 1942) are two contrasting pieces: If the Sarabande – like the Feierliche Ruf (composed in 1941) – is an effective Intrade for all festive and solemn occasions, the Fugue requires accomplished wind players who are able to work out the contrapuntal finesse of the piece, which sounds so funny.
