Concertino in C
Fl, Ob, Kl, Hn, Fg
Fine tonal shadings, a differentiated compositional technique with very independently conducted instrumental parts as well as memorable melodies characterize this three-movement Concertino in C for wind quintet, which is based on the classical-romantic musical language. The mostly playful, exuberant, at the same time briskly gripping and at times dramatic opening movement is characterized over long stretches by its characteristic basic rhythm. Sometimes pulsating in the background, sometimes clearly prominent, it holds the movement together in conjunction with in-depth thematic work. The slow, serious middle movement in E minor forms the emotional center of the work: after a striking, signal-like opening motif is slowly lost, an expressive lament is intoned. The vocal theme of the middle section oscillates between comforting C major and elegiac A minor, before an exciting recitative section leads back to the lament. The lively, virtuoso final movement is by turns capricious, expressive, dramatic and brilliant and also quotes themes and sections from the preceding movements. This effective concert piece ends with the coda of the first movement, now accelerated to a Presto furioso – the circle is complete.
